The Triumph TR4 was based on the chassis and drive train of the previous TR sports cars, but with a modern Giovanni Michelotti styled body. The TR4 was good for a top speed of around 175 km/h and could do the 0-100 km/h dash in just under 11 seconds. Like earlier TR models this performance made it a popular choice for sports car racing.
The TR4 included wind-down windows, adjustable fascia ventilation and more luggage space. These new features were seen as necessary to achieve good sales in the important US market, where the vast majority of TR4s were eventually sold.
